A rig operator in central Oklahoma had 300 joints of XT-39 drill pipe and Hevi-Wate. After inspection, it was determined that 71 joints of pipe, with 92 damaged ends, needed to be scheduled for re-cut and refacing. Of the damaged connections, 61 connections would require refacing and 31 of the connections were so close to the benchmark, they would require the more costly re-cut.
The traditional method of repair requires time-consuming and expensive shipping of the damaged pipe to the machine shop. Including the price of trucking, the fees for refacing and re-cuts, the total cost of repair was $10,790. Considering the travel time for transporting the pipe to and from the machine shop, as well as the typical machine shop backlog, the turn-around time to repair the damaged pipe and return it to service is, at minimum, 2 weeks.
